Aims of Course

• To help build a picture of the past and to understand what has shaped the world we live in today,
• To help understand the ideas and beliefs of people in other places and times,
• To develop the ability to look at evidence from all points of view and come to a balanced conclusion,
• To provide an experience which will be interesting and enjoyable and lay the foundations for skills to be further developed in the Senior Phase.

Description of the Course

Theme: Persecution of groups of people throughout History. The course is delivered in three sections:

1. Black People of the Americas - This topic looks at the persecution of African Americans by looking at:
   • The Atlantic slave trade,
   • The American Civil War,
   • The Civil Rights Movement.
2. Witches of the World - This topic looks at the persecution of women from the 15th to the 17th century through investigations of:
   • Mother Shipton,
   • Pendal Witch Trials,
   • Salem Witch Trials,
   • Scottish Survey on Witches.
3. Jewish People throughout History - This topic looks at the persecution of people of the Jewish religion.
